Asthma is a chronic disease that is characterized by the following three events, each of which make breathing difficult:
· inflammation or swelling of the lining of the airways
· production of excess mucous in the bronchioles
· involuntary tightening of the muscles around the airways.
In Asthma, the airways become hyper-reactive.
Exposure to irritants like pollen, dust, cigarette smoke or very cold air can make breathing difficult, because of excess tightening and narrowing of the airways.
