WHAT IS SECTION 504?


  • Section 504 is the federal law that ‘levels the playing ground’ so that students with disabilities have the same opportunities at school as students who don’t have disabilities.

  • Section 504 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in any program or activity that receives federal funding.

  • Section 504 provides for accommodations for students with disabilities in order for them to be successful in school.

  • Section 504 is the law that led to the building of ramps and elevators in public buildings in the US to ensure accessibility to individuals who use wheelchairs, walkers or who have other mobility disabilities.

  • The “504” refers to a section of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
