What are “Related Services”?

  • Federal law IDEA defines related services as:
           - Transportation services
           - Developmental services
           - Corrective services
           - and Other Supportive services

  • Schools are only required by IDEA (Federal Law “IDEA”) to provide related services to students who are eligible for special education.

  • Schools are only required to provide those related services that the student would need in order to benefit from his or her special education program.

  • Speech-language therapy, occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) are often provided as related services in schools.

  • Other related services include: parent counseling and training to assist parents in understanding the special needs of their child and provide parents with information about child development.

  • The School Psychologist, School Social Worker or School Nurse may provide this counseling.
