FEDERAL LAW: “IDEA”

  The Individual with Disabilities Education Act
  • Ensures that children with disabilities are provided with a FAPE (Free and Appropriate Public Education)

  • Applies to children, birth through 21 years old

  • Provides for IEP’s

  • Calls for education in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

  • Initially enacted into law in 1975 (as PL 94-142) and reauthorized in 1997 and 2004.
